Appropriating a Space for Modernism : Ezra Pound and the New Freewoman

In the discursive configuration of modernism, small journals, by providing a forum in which oppositional discourse could circulate, open up a space for a textual politics of influence – doubled in this particular case by a sexual politics determinant in shaping taste and standards through which new writing is to be received. Pound’s tactical and manipulative appropriation of the Freewoman for his version of the imagist movement is an instance of this construction of audience.
