The Surrealist Journal and its leaders

The surrealist journal which brough together strong individualities gave, in principle, greater importance to the movement’s collective expression. However, during the interwar years, some figures stood out. For instance, the first journal, Littérature (1919-1924), founded by a triumvirate, went through three different stages corresponding to the successive symbolical preeminence of Aragon, Soupault and Breton. During the last stage, Soupault was brutally evicted, but, on the whole, the group spirit prevailed over inner rivalries. Thus, certain disruptions in the collective autobiography necessarily resulted in the journal’s title being changed.
