An impossible Louis Althusser’s review : Theorie
From 1963 onward, there are traces in Althusser’s correspondence of the philosopher’s will to produce a review. In 1966, while a study group was formed and a few articles commissioned, a project was initiated. In fact, the idea was to counter any possible exploiting after the success of Pour Marx and Lire le Capital and to offer a criticism of structuralism. That project was soon given up. In 1967, the politico-theoretical study group “Spinoza” was established and used as a laboratory for the review Théorie. This project was better structured: the shape of the review, the part played by each member of the group and the themes of the first issues were clearly set up. But difficulties within the group as well as changes in the political circumstances made it impossible for Théorie to ever come out.
