La revue Maghreb associe de jeunes intellectuels marocains et des militants de la gauche française, notamment socialistes, désireux au moins de faire évoluer le régime du protectorat, en attendant d’aller vers l’indépendance. La dénonciation des réalités coloniales va de pair avec des propositions de réformes. L’hostilité des milieux coloniaux et l’écho limité, même dans la gauche française, des animateurs de la revue font échouer leurs projets de réformes, malgré la présence, en 1932-1934 et 1936-1937, de gouvernements « amis ». L’échec de la revue est aussi celui de la gauche française à réformer le système colonial.
Maghreb, a Franco-Morroccan review against the Protectorate, 1932-1936
The review Maghreb was written by fellow-partners, young Moroccan intellectuals and supporters of the French left, mostly socialists, all of them wishing to bring the protectorate regime to alter while hoping for future independence. The authors denounce the actual nature of the colonial world and suggest reforms. The hostile reaction of the colonial environment together with the limited echo produced even among the French left caused these projects of reforms to be unsuccessful, in spite of the presence of “friendly” governments in 1932-34 and 1936-37. That meant a double failure: not only the failure of the review, but also that of the French left at reforming the colonial system.
