[]A resurrection in the French way: the review []L’Arche (1944-1947)

Placed under the patronage of André Gide and launched by Jean Amrouche in February 1944, the review []L’Arche[], edited by the Charlot house in Algiers and later in Paris, first sought to restore the rights of a humanitarian and free thought in the midst of this black period. It was in fact primarily the defense and illustration of a “classical” French literature that would characterise it throughout its 26 issues, and this was to lead to its interruption when the Libération became effective: in a period impregnated by a culture that was shaped on the other side of the Atlantic, these were no longer times in which to celebrate the glory and dignity of a free literature.[]
