Lionel Richard retraces the creation of the journal Europe. The journal itself mentions Romain Rolland as a sort of founder, motivating spirit, a person who, by his intellectual reknown, dedication and influence, made possible the project of an international non-political and intellectual journal. Lionel Richard shows that the actual role played by Romain Rolland was in reality less important and he underlines the continuity which exists between the journals Art libre (1919-1922) and Europe (first published in 1922), both having Paul Colin as chief editor.
Nicole Racine questions this interpretation in her answer to Richard’s article.
