Vort est un magazine littéraire édité de 1972 à 1976 par Barry Alpert aux États-Unis. Bien souvent acclamé par la critique pour son contenu (« l’encyclopédie malheureusement inachevée de la Nouvelle Poésie Américaine »), il reste peu étudié en tant qu’objet. Les neuf numéros (sauf un) suivent une même logique, énoncée par l’éditeur dans le premier : présenter de manière attenante interviews et études de deux poètes dont l’influence apparaît comme réciproque, que ce soit dans leur vie ou dans leurs œuvres respectives. Une autre originalité de Vort est le désir d’étudier un poète dans sa complexité, en refusant de lui appliquer immédiatement un système de pensée lié à un mouvement littéraire. Cet article présente l’éditeur de Vort et retrace l’histoire de cette revue si singulière, qui prend naissance dans une période éditoriale féconde communément appelée la « mimeo revolution ».
An introduction to Vort (1972-1976, ed. Barry S. Alpert)
Vort is a literary magazine edited between 1972 and 1976 by Barry Alpert in Silver Spring, Maryland. Though its content is acknowledged among critics (“[the] unfortunately unfinished encyclopedia of the New American Poetry”), its importance regarding poetic and editorial studies appears to be still unexplored. The nine issues (except for the fifth) follow a precise structure mentioned by the editor himself in the first : offering interviews and studies of two poets side by side who had a mutual influence, whether it be on their works or through their lives. One of the other key features of Vort is the aim to study poets in their own complexity, refusing to define them and their works through the prism of larger literary movements in which they are usually (and a priori) read. This paper is an introduction to the editor of Vort and tells the story of this unique magazine, edited during a highly creative era, also known as the “mimeo revolution”.
