Québec intellectuals as seen through their magazines
Based on a current study of over 350 Québécois magazines published between 1817 and the present day covering all disciplines (art, literature, philosophy), the author demonstrates how editorials or manifestos introducing the first issues of magazines constitute a rare testimony of the history of Quebec’s intellectuals. In these founding texts, the magazine’s creators define themselves as a group, and while presenting a diagnosis of society in general, comment on the intellectual milieu and how they fit into this society.
