Paul Ricœur n’est pas un intellectuel engagé dans la guerre d’Algérie à la différence de plusieurs compagnons d’Esprit comme Paul Thibaud, Pierre Vidal-Naquet, Francis Jeanson ou même Jean-Marie Domenach. Toutefois, la lecture de ses écrits, publiés dans Esprit ou manuscrits préparatoires à des interventions orales, conservés au Fonds Ricœur, invite à nuancer son portrait. Il y développe son approche sur le FLN, refusant toute violence et toute atteinte aux droits fondamentaux. Il s’affirme avec fermeté en faveur de la paix, de la négociation, du droit des Algériens à disposer d’un État indépendant, de la défense inconditionnelle de l’État de droit constamment piétiné par la France en Algérie.
Ricœur, Esprit, the Algerian War
Unlike several companions of Esprit such as Paul Thibaud, Pierre Vidal-Naquet, Francis Jeanson or even Jean-Marie Domenach, Paul Ricœur was not an intellectual engaged in the Algerian war. However, reading his writings published in Esprit and preparatory manuscripts for oral interventions kept at the Ricœur Fund, we are invited to revise this portrait of him. In these works, he developed his approach to the FLN, refusing any violence and any violation of fundamental rights. He firmly asserted himself in favour of peace, negotiation, the right of Algerians to have an independent state, the unconditional defence of the rule of law that was being constantly trampled on by France in Algeria.
